Our Powder Coating Department FAQs

What is powder coating and why choose it for your metal components?

Powder coating is a highly durable and environmentally sustainable finishing process that delivers exceptional protection and a superior aesthetic for your metal fabrications. Unlike traditional liquid paint, dry powder is electrostatically applied to the metal surface and then cured in an oven. This creates a robust finish with excellent resistance to chipping, scratching, fading, and corrosion, making it ideal for a wide array of applications, from critical industrial components to high-quality consumer products.

What kind of powder coating system do you use?

We use an advanced ITW Gema powder coating system, known for its precision application, excellent transfer efficiency, and consistent finish quality. This system allows for fast colour changes and high throughput, making it ideal for both small and large production runs.

Which materials are suitable for your expert powder coating services?

Our powder coating expertise primarily extends to various metal components, including mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminium. Our system is meticulously optimised to ensure a uniform, long-lasting finish across these diverse substrates, guaranteeing superior durability regardless of the material type.

What is involved in your pre-treatment process?

Before any part is coated, it undergoes a thorough pre-wash and preparation process to remove oils, contaminants, and oxidation. This critical step ensures strong powder adhesion and enhances durability.

Do you offer surface preparation like buffing and bunging?

Yes, we carry out buffing to smooth surfaces and ensure an even finish. We also perform bunging, which involves masking or plugging holes and threads to protect areas that shouldn’t be coated. This attention to detail ensures a high-quality, functional finish.

What colours and finishes are available?

We offer a wide range of standard and custom colours in various textures and gloss levels—from smooth matte blacks to metallic gloss finishes. We can match corporate colours or assist in selecting the perfect look for your product.

Can you handle high-volume orders?

Yes, our automated line and ITW Gema system are designed for efficiency and speed, making us capable of handling both small batches and high-volume production runs with quick turnaround and consistent quality.

How durable is the powder-coated finish for industrial and commercial applications?

Our powder-coated finishes provide superior durability and outstanding corrosion resistance, significantly outperforming traditional wet paint applications. The finish is remarkably tough and flexible, engineered to withstand rigorous everyday wear and challenging environmental exposure, making it perfectly suited for both demanding indoor and harsh outdoor applications.

How large are the parts you can powder coat?

We can accommodate a variety of part sizes, including large components, depending on your specific project requirements. Feel free to get in touch with dimensions, and we’ll confirm suitability.

How do you ensure quality throughout the powder coating process?

Quality is built into every stage—from thorough pre-treatment and surface prep, to expert coating and final inspection. We maintain strict process controls and regularly test finishes for thickness, adhesion, and consistency to ensure a flawless result.

FAQs about Powder coating

What's the difference between painting and powder coating?

Wet painting: This method uses liquid paint, which includes solvents to maintain the right fluid consistency.

Powder coating: It’s a dry powder applied to the surface. The powder contains resins (usually polyester, polyester-epoxy, acrylic, or polyethylene) and pigments. Note that it doesn’t contain solvents.

Is powder coating more effective than painting?

Wet painting: Requires skilled painters to apply the liquid paint evenly. Curing can happen in an oven or through air drying. It may fade over time but offers flexibility in colour options and easy touch-ups.

Powder coating: Applied using an electrostatic gun, which charges the powder particles and attracts them to the metal surface. Then, the item cures in an oven. It is more durable than wet paint and less likely to chip or scratch.

Can powder coating be done on site?

Yes, we are able to powder coat as part of our end-to-end fabrication process.

Where can I get something powder coated?

JC Metalworks specialise in the fabrication of sheet metal parts. Powder coating is just one of our areas of expertise, for the vast majority of cases it would be a complement to our other services offered.
